"Energy Transition = Energy security!" was the motto of the 2023 edition of World Sustainable Energy Days (WSED) that was held last week. Over 650 participants from 60 countries convened in Wels, Austria to learn, share, and network.
Organized annually by the Upper Austria Energy Agency (OÖ Energiesparverband), this year’s edition with Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine backdrop, highlighted the critical role of the energy transition in securing a clean energy future and concrete policies, technologies, and markets to get there.
Held as part of WSED, the 2023 European Pellet Conference started with the strategy session “Pellets – clean and climate neutral!”, which presented the policy and market context for the clean energy transition and provided insights on how to deal with the current challenges.
This was followed by a panel discussion on “The future of wood pellets”, in which leading biomass experts shared their insights on how to “separate facts from fiction” on topics such as forestry, air quality, and sustainability.

Other highlights of the one-day European Pellet Conference were the “Pellet Innovation Session”, which showcased cutting-edge developments and R&D results in the pellet and bioenergy sectors; the “Start-up Session”, where start-ups presented their innovations for the pellet market; and the “World of Pellets Session”, where international experts offered updates and outlooks on pellet markets around the world.
The next edition of the World Sustainable Energy Days will be held March, 6-8, 2024 in Wels. The deadline for the Call for Papers is October 10, 2023.
