Liquid Wind secures SEK 151 million investment grant for FlagshipONE

Swedish power-to-liquids (PtL) developer Liquid Wind AB has announced that it has been awarded a SEK 151 million (≈ EUR 14.78 million) investment grant from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's "Klimatklivet" (Climate Step) program for its FlagshipONE e-methanol production facility in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.

Liquid Wind AB has been awarded a SEK 151 million (≈ EUR 14.78 million) investment grant from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s “Klimatklivet” (Climate Step) program for its FlagshipONE e-methanol production facility that will be built in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden (image courtesy Liquid Wind).

Administrated by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Klimatklivet is a government support program for investments that reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), and other greenhouse gases (GHGs). The invested funds must provide the largest possible emission reduction per invested krona.

Liquid Wind’s FlagshipONE is Sweden’s first commercial-scale electro-fuel (eFuel) plant that will supply the market with 50 000 tonnes per annum of renewable and fossil-free e-methanol fuel for shipping.

Using captured biogenic CO2 and green hydrogen produced using wind power, the plant will be built adjacent toÖvik Energi’s biomass-fired Hörneborgsverket在Ornskoldsvi热电联产(CHP)工厂k. Along with Övik Energi, partners includeAlfa Laval,Carbon Clean, Haldor Topsoe,Siemens Energy,Uniper, andWorley.

Construction of FlagshipONE is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2022 and production is scheduled to begin in 2024.

The investment grant gives Liquid Wind a fantastic opportunity to quickly implement the first of many facilities. It gives us the opportunity to utilize resources that already exist in Sweden to produce a fuel that replaces imported fossil fuels used today. With e-methanol as a replacement, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by over 90 percent. The positive decision from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet means that Liquid Wind and our partners can accelerate the transition to green fuels, said Claes Fredriksson, CEO of Liquid Wind.
