The European Energy Exchange AG (EEX) has announced that it has been appointed by the French Ministry of Energy Transition to develop and operate registry and auctioning services for biogas Guarantees of Origin (GOs), as well as registry services for biogas production certificates.
In coordination with the Ministry, EEX will launch the biogas GO registry on 1 October 2023, taking over from the French gas distributor GrDF, the current operator of the scheme.
The first auctions for biogas GOs are expected to be held at the beginning of 2024.
We are delighted to extend our collaboration with the French state. Biogas markets are critical for the energy transition, which is a fundamental objective for the EEX Group and our stakeholders. Reliable GO mechanisms will increase trust through transparency and accelerate the adoption of such renewable fuels. The French Ministry of Energy Transition already entrusted us with managing the registry and associated auctions in the power sector, and we look forward to replicating the same success with the first cleared biogas GO auctions, while moving together towards a cleaner energy future, said Peter Reitz, CEO of EEX.
Active across the value chain
Germany-headed European Energy Exchange (EEX) is a leading energy exchange that builds secure, successful, and sustainable commodity markets worldwide – together with its customers.
As part of EEX Group, a group of companies serving international commodity markets, it offers contracts on power, natural gas, and emission allowances as well as freight and agricultural products.
EEX Group is active across the entire value chain, from providing unique services to issuing bodies across Europe to offering trading solutions for GOs.
EEX has been the issuing body for power GOs in France since 2013, operating associated primary auctions, and has overseen the French registry for energy savings certificates since 2018.
In 2022, another EEX Group company, EPEX SPOT, launched the first monthly pan-European power GO auction.
G-REX platform
Similar to the French Power GO registry managed by EEX, the company will become the issuing body (registry operator) as well as the auction operator for the new products.
GOs and registry services are central to the company’s efforts to support the energy transition through increasing transparency and trust for market players to adopt renewables.
GOs provide transparent tracking of the origins of renewable energy within the EU, including sources for renewable electricity, biogas, and hydrogen.
In addition, registries provide a standardized, transparent, and efficient energy certification scheme, in line with European legislation, that companies can use in their decarbonization efforts.
For the registry services, EEX will use the G-REX platform, developed by EEX Group company Grexel Systems Oy, which is a state-of-the-art platform for registries in Europe, actively driving registry solutions in 15 countries through their bespoke G-REX platform.
