The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) has announced US$2.5 million in funding, with an industry match of US$2.5 million, for four projects selected from the Base Annual Appropriations Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF).

The Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) aims to bolster America’s energy competitiveness and security by accelerating commercialization and shepherding critical energy technologies from the laboratory to the market, where the private sector will continue to innovate.

With this funding, DOE national laboratories and industry will partner to advance lab-developed clean bioenergy technologies towards commercialization to reduce carbon intensity in the transportation, industrial, and/or agriculture sectors.

BETO and OTT have selected the following TCF projects:

  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Cellulosic Ethanol– Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in partnership with Gevo, Inc., Englewood, Colorado (CO).
  • Sustainable Tire Production: Catalytic Upgrading of Ethanol into Butadiene– Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in partnership with Bridgestone Americas, Inc., Akron, Ohio (OH).
  • Engineering Enzymes for Crystalline PET Substrates– National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in partnership with Birch Biosciences, Portland, Oregon (OR).
  • Scaling up Arrested Methanogenesis Technology for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production– Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in partnership with Great Lakes Water Authority, Detroit, Michigan (MI); the University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago, Illinois (IL); and Sulzer Chemtech USA, Inc., Humble, Texas (TX).
