Saipem and Stockholm Exergi partner on large-scale BECCS
Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) as a solvent has been used to capture carbon dioxide for many decades (pre-combustion), with hundreds of HPC plants in commercial operation in the chemical process industry. In July 2022, Stockholm Exergi signed a Patent License agreement for the use of Capsol's HPC technology for carbon dioxide capture at its Bioenergy with Carbon Capture (BECCS) demo plant at its Värtaverket biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Stockholm, Sweden.

Italy-headed Società Azionaria Italiana Perforazione e Montaggi S.p.A (Saipem), a leading company in the engineering, drilling, and construction of major energy and infrastructure projects, and Sweden's Stockholm Exergi AB, the capital city's energy company, have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a large-scale carbon capture plant to be installed at Stockholm Exergi’s existing biomass-fired cogeneration plant in Stockholm.

According to a statement, the scope of work for Saipem covers the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities for the carbon capture unit, the carbon dioxide (CO2) storage as well as the ship loading systems for CO2transportation.

In the meantime, the LoI allows the start of limited, engineering-related activities, while finalizing the main terms of the EPC contract expected to be signed in Q3 2023.

Once completed, the biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant will be able to capture and remove 800 000 tonnes of biogenic CO2每年from Värtaverket, thus enabling “negative emissions”.

We are pleased to be selected for this large-scale carbon capture project in Stockholm and are fully committed to supporting our client’s sustainability goals. This project will enable Saipem to further consolidate its position in the decarbonization sector and expand its portfolio in the CCS segment, providing a fundamental contribution to the energy transition of Sweden and Europe, said Fabrizio Botta, Chief Commercial Officer at Saipem.

Once completed, Stockholm Exergi’s “BECCS @ STHLM” project, which has receivedfinancial support from the European Innovation Fund, will be one of Europe’s first large-scale plants to generate “negative emissions”, leading to the issuing of Carbon Removal Certificates (CRCs) which can then be traded on the market.

我们之间的合作和Saipem导入ant step towards the development of our large-scale plant for the separation and permanent storage of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). Stockholm Exergi is at the forefront of establishing BECCS and the goal is to construct one of Europe’s first and largest value chains for bioenergy carbon capture and storage, said Per Ytterberg, Director of Business Development at Stockholm Exergi and Head of its BECCS business project.
