Sappi Saiccor signs long-term service deal with ANDRITZ
Sappi is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of dissolving pulp with two mills in South Africa, Saiccor Mill (above) and Ngodwana Mill, and one in North America, Cloquet Mill. Using plantation-grown eucalyptus, Sappi Saiccor Mill has the capacity to produce approximately 890 000 tonnes of elemental chlorine-free (ECF) dissolving pulp (DP) per annum (photo courtesy Sappi).

Austria-headed International technology group Andritz AG (ANDRITZ) has announced that it has signed a three-year service contract with dissolving pulp producer Sappi Saiccor, part of Sappi Ltd, for two recovery boilers operating at the Saiccor mill in Umkomaas, South Africa.

South Africa-headed pulp and paper major Sappi Ltd, is a leading global provider of sustainable wood fiber products and solutions, in the fields of dissolving pulp, printing papers, packaging, specialty papers, casting and release papers, biomaterials, and bioenergy.

Situated 50 km south of the port of Durban, the Sappi Saiccor mill produces elemental chlorine-free (ECF) dissolving pulp, mostly for the export market.

The two ANDRITZ boilers producing 230 tph of steam at 490°C and 86 bar have been operating at the Saiccor mill since 2008 and 2021 respectively.

The service agreement will help the Saiccor mill maintain safe and efficient operation while improving the reliability and availability of the boilers.

The scope includes operation support, engineering support, pre-shutdown services, and annual shutdown services such as mechanical and process inspection, as well as an advisory service for boiler washing and boiler repair and replacement works.
