Mondelēz International switches to HVO in the Nordics

Global confectionery and snacks major US-headed Mondelēz International, Inc., has announced that the company is replacing fossil diesel with renewable diesel (HVO) on all transports in Sweden, Finland, and Denmark as part of Mondelēz International's commitment to a 2050 net-zero emissions target. The use of HVO, a renewable diesel completely based on food waste, is estimated to reduce 2 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually - a reduction of 88 percent.

In the Nordics, Mondelēz International has used HVO on selected transports since May 1, 2021, to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) of the company’s own transports from factory to warehouse.

The company works actively to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the business and has worked closely with Denmark-headed transport company Frode Laursen A/S to further reduce CO2 emissions in their transports.

As of November 1, 2021, the company is using HVO fuel for all transports with Frode Laursen.

As part of our work to further reduce emissions in our operations, we are working with the logistics company Frode Laursen and switching to HVO diesel in all transports they do for us. This change is needed for us to reduce our climate footprint and thus contribute to slowing down global warming. We see this as an important milestone in our work to create a sustainable future and hope that more people do as we do, says Martina Flemström MD at Mondelēz International in Sweden and Finland.

According to Mondelēz International, HVO fuel is one of the cleanest fuels on the market. It is a second-generation, synthetic and advanced renewable diesel alternative that eliminates up to 88 percent of net CO2 and significantly reduces emissions of local air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and carbon monoxide (CO).

As part of our roadmap towards becoming fossil-free and reducing our emissions, we have worked out a solution where we quickly reduce our CO2 footprint for transports. This is done by switching fuel to HVO. In this way, we are taking a big step towards our long-term ambition to use fossil-free transport. We will continue to streamline our transports by evaluating our internal logistics network, but also to ensure the maximum utilization rate of our contacted transport capacity, said Kenneth Bjurström Logistics Operations Manager in the Nordics.

Committed to a 2050 net-zero emissions target

On November 1, 2021, Mondelēz International, Inc. announced that it is committing to a 2050 target of net-zero GHG emissions across its full value chain.

For logistics, this includes investing in new mobility concepts including electric and hydrogen trucks, reducing warehouse emissions at both owned and third-party facilities by converting to renewable energy sources, and improving the efficiency of distribution networks by optimizing routes, improving truck, and container utilization, increasing intermodal solutions and reducing traveled distances.

As part of its commitment, Mondelēz International has signed theScience-Based Targets initiative’s(SBTi)业务的野心1.5°C,aligning its long-term emissions mitigation targets with the ambitious aim of limiting temperature rise in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

For the last several years, we’ve worked with the Science Based Targets initiative to reduce our emissions footprint and our announcement today will help accelerate our existing efforts to create a more sustainable snacking company. We’re transforming how we do business across our operations and with the suppliers and farmers we work with – from seeking to improve cocoa farming practices in West Africa to promoting regenerative agriculture in wheat fields in the Midwest United States said Dirk Van de Put, Chairman and CEO, Mondelēz International.

This new commitment builds on the company’s existing science-based targets set in 20201 developed to contribute to combatting climate change.

Over the next two years, the company will lay out a time-bound plan including interim targets for its key emissions sources consistent with the 1.5°C protocol and will provide annual progress reviews for transparency as laid out by the SBTi.

While we’ve already made significant progress, the road to net-zero will require a further transformation of our business as well as global collaboration across industries, sectors, and landscapes. We will remain focused on leveraging proven models and available solutions, while at the same time using our scale and influence to help drive technical advancement, public-private collaboration, and investment to incubate innovation, said Chris McGrath, VP, and Chief of Global Impact and Sustainability.

Mondelēz International has also joined the United Nations (UN)Race to Zero Campaignto help build momentum towards a decarbonized economy.
